During your HNC you will visit a range of relevant animal collections and centres as well as receive talks from a range of subject specialists to enhance the programme content.

Trips may include, Donna Nook seal colony, Chester Zoo, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, The Deep, Lotherton Hall Bird Garden, Hearing Dogs, North Cave Wetlands, Bransby Horses and Bempton Cliffs.

Some visits may be free, but others will incur a charge varying with the nature of the visit and the distance travelled.  Such charges will be kept to a reasonable rate.

Before you begin your course, you’ll need to make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment. Many of our courses need specialist health and safety clothing, but we’ve made it simple - some of your essentials and college branded clothing can be bought from our online shop.

For your course, you will need:

  • A tablet, laptop or stationery to take notes in lectures and seminars
  • USB stick and / or portable hard drive
  • College-branded white laboratory coat
  • College-branded blue kennel coat
  • Appropriate waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear for outdoor practicals
  • Strong steel toe capped boots for practical sessions
  • The college has a strict policy of not allowing work boots inside college buildings – you will need to have alternative footwear (shoes or trainers) to attend lectures and tutorials.
  • Roughly £300 to cover the costs of field trips and visits over the duration of your programme
  • Training equipment will be required (i.e. clicker and target stick) for the training related modules (this module can be selected as an option on the programme).
